PRCS Steps Up for a Plastic-Free Karachi With Eco-Friendly Market Visits

The Pakistan Red Crescent Sindh Branch (PRCS), under its Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) initiative and with support from the German Red Cross, launched a Plastic-Free Karachi campaign to promote reusable bags in local markets.

As part of this green initiative, PRCS teams visited several Market Associations across Karachi. During these visits, they directly engaged with shopkeepers, business owners, and the general public. The team distributed canvas bags to encourage a shift from plastic to sustainable alternatives.

This activity aimed to reduce single-use plastic bags and raise environmental awareness. Through face-to-face interaction, the PRCS team discussed the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment and public health. Vendors were encouraged to stop selling and stocking plastic bags and to motivate customers to bring their own reusable bags

By replacing disposable bags with eco-friendly options, the campaign hopes to build long-term sustainable habits in local communities. This small step can create a big impact on Karachi’s cleanliness, reduce pollution, and help achieve a greener, cleaner city.

Together, through collective action and consistent awareness, Plastic-Free Karachi can become a reality — setting an example for other cities across Pakistan.
